Two of New York state’s leading literacy organizations, Literacy Volunteers of America - Mohawk/Hudson and Literacy NENY, merged on July 1, 2009 and formed a new entity, Literacy New York Greater Capital Region.
Both literacy programs were founded as Literacy Volunteers of America. Today, we still foster the same standards as when we started nearly 40 years ago and proudly continue to offer free, quality, resource-based literacy services for adults.
Staffed by experienced professionals and hundreds of trained and committed volunteer tutors, Literacy New York Greater Capital Region programs focus instruction to meet the goals of our adult learners.
We work to keep abreast of new learning trends along with evolving literacy needs. Today, literacy instruction reaches beyong the traditional skills of learning to read and write in order to help adults meet the demands of our changing world.

We serve over 400 people from more than 60 countries each year.
